Maharashtrian Patal Bhaji or Dal Bhaji Recipe

Dal is served in many different ways in every Indian Cuisine. Patal Bhaji or Dal Bhaji is a classic Maharashtrian Dal made using green leafy vegetable Palak along with chana dal with or without Tuvar Dal and spices. Patal Bhaji is very simple easy to make delicious and healthy recipe. This delicious Dal goes very well with simple plain steamed rice along with roti or paratha.

Ingredients For Maharashtrian Patal Bhaji or Dal Bhaji Recipe

Methods
  • 1. Wash and soak tuvar dal and chana dal in enough water for half an hour. Wash palak leaves properly and remove in strainer. Once water is strained, roughly chop palak leaves and keep aside. Chop onion and tomato too.
  • 2. Pressure cook tuvar dal and chana dal along with chopped palak leaves, onions and tomatoes for 4 whistles and let it cool down. Coarsely blend intermittently everything. Do not blend more.
  • 3. Heat oil in kadhai on medium flame. Add mustard seeds, jeera, meethi seeds and curry leaves. Let it splutter and add coarsely blended dal mixture. Mix well and cook for 2 mins. Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, dhania jeera powder, garam masala, salt, and peanuts. Mix well and add water to adjust the consistency.
  • 4. Mix well. Lower the flame and cook for 10 to 12 mins stirring occasionally. Switch off the flame.
  • 5. Tempering - Heat a tbsp of oil in tadka pan. Add 1/4 tsp mustard seeds, 1/4 tsp jeera, pinch turmeric powder, 1/4 tsp red chilli powder and dhania jeera powder. Once mustard seeds and jeera crackles, pour tadka on prepared dal and mix well. Patal Bhaji is ready to serve.
  • 6. Serve hot with roti, rice, pickle, salad and buttermilk. Enjoy the delicious and healthy Patal Bhaji or Dal Bhaji.
