Recipe Notes

~ soaked Barley for a minimum of half an hour so that the cooking time is less.~ Chop the vegetables fine so that they cook quickly.~ Divide the quantity of salt, sugar and lemon into two. Add one part while boiling the barley and the other in vegetables.

Methods
  • 1. Wash and soak barley for half an hour. In the meanwhile finely chop onion, capsicum, tomatoes and coriander leaves. Keep the green chilli whole.
  • 2. In a pan add the drained barley and saute it for 30 seconds on medium flame.
  • 3. Add one and a half cups of water and bring it to a boil. Cover it and when half water remains add salt, sugar and lemon
  • 4. Let the barley cook till it is well done and all the water is absorbed. After it is cooked do not cover it and keep aside.
  • 5. In another pan add oil and mustard seeds. When it Splutter add dried red chilli and cumin seeds. Let it Splutter too.
  • 6. Now add onion, capsicum, tomatoes and ginger garlic paste. Saute it on medium high flame for a minute. Then add green chilli and mix.
  • 7. Now put the flame on low and add all the dry spices. Mix well and cook till the oil separates
  • 8. When the spices gets cooked add salt, sugar and lemon.
  • 9. Finally add the boiled barley and coriander leaves. Mix well
  • 10. Now serve the upma hot as it is or with your favourite chutney.
