Description
Mango is a tropical tree from the species Mangifera indica and is cultivated in many regions of India. It has an oval shape, with uneven sides. There are various varieties of mangoes that are available and eaten fondly world over, one of them being "Alphonso" mangoes. The Alphonso mango is a seasonal fruit that is available from mid-April to the end of June. Alphonso is named after Afonso de Albuquerque, a military expert who helped to establish the Portuguese colony in India. Later, Alphonso mangoes were introduced to the Konkan region in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and parts of south India. The skin of Alphonso mango appears to be bright golden-yellow with a tinge of red which spreads across the top of the fruit and a saffron-colored flesh when it is fully ripe. These mangoes are well known for their distinctly strong aroma due to the presence of high levels of a terpenoid called myrcene. Mycerene is a naturally occurring chemical in plants responsible for flavor and aroma. In addition to being packed with many essential vitamins, mangoes contain high amounts of potassium, magnesium, and enzymes that aid in digestion.
